Sore Throat

What is a Sore Throat

A sore throat, is an uncomfortable sensation in the throat, often accompanied by pain, difficulty swallowing, or speaking.

It is a common ailment that is associated with viral infections, especially those causing the common cold. The condition usually resolves on its own within 10 days, but certain factors can prolong the discomfort. The inflammation in the throat may present with redness, swollen glands, and occasionally, white spots or thick mucus.

While bacterial infections are less frequent, they can also contribute to sore throats. Additionally, environmental factors such as smoking and dry air, as well as certain health conditions like STIs, can play a role.

  • Viral Causes: Often caused by Common Cold viruses, mononucleosis, and occasionally, the coronavirus.
  • Bacterial Causes: In rare cases, bacterial infections may lead to a sore throat.
  • Environmental & Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, frequent throat clearing, shouting, and exposure to dry air.
  • Other Triggers: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and inflammation of the thyroid gland.
